Due to the pleasant Mediterranean climate, the Via Apsyrtides trails can be hiked at any time of the year, but it is best to do so in spring, early and late summer, and autumn.
Via Apsyrtides trails are marked with a unique blue-red marking in the shape of the letter VA, or blue-red lines where it was not possible to mark otherwise. North of the town of Cres, this unique marking is used both the main trail and connecting sections, while south of the town of Cres VA marking is used only on the main trail, while the connecting sections are marked with standard hiking trail signs (red and white circle).
• You can reach the islands of the Cres-Lošinj archipelago by bus, catamaran or by your own vehicle using a ferry. For more information visit the following websites:
• Apart from the towns of Cres and Mali Lošinj, Via Apsyrtides passes by many other picturesque villages, so we recommend that you choose some of them for your accommodation. Find accommodation on the following web pages:
• You can camp only in smaller and larger organized campsites on the islands. In the Republic of Croatia camping is strictly regulated and camping outside the campsites is not allowed, so book your accommodation on time in one of the many island campsites. You can find more information about them on the following web pages:
The peculiarity of the Cres-Lošinj archipelago is that there are no poisonous snakes! Amongthe potentially dangerous animals on the islands you can meet wild boars. If you see a wild boar, do not disturb it in any way. On the islands you will also meet deer, but also many sheep that sometimes run out on the road, so drivers are urged to be extra careful.
The availability of drinking water is indicated in the tab Services within each of the sections.
Experienced sport cyclists can only partially use the Via Apsyrtides trail for mountain biking. The suitability of trail sections for cycling is not marked neither on the map nor in the field. Before embarking on a Via Apsyrtides bike adventure, a thorough preparation and study of the trail sections is recommended.
Basically yes. This of course depends entirely on the planning and the hiking experience of the children. All the stages are classified as easy, moderate and hard. Additional difficulty classification is provided through 1-10 star system. Please, check the difficulty level of the track before the departure with children. Take enough food and water and plan enough breaks and give the little ones the opportunity to discover their surroundings.
If you don’t want to spend the night in a different accommodation every day and want to save yourself packing your bags, we recommend booking two accommodations, one in Cres and in one in Mali Lošinj. You can get on the starting point of each trail by public bus, taxi or by your car.
The Via Apsyrtides can also be walked with a dog. A large part of the archipelago area is intended for sheep grazing, so it is necessary that the dog does not disturb the sheep – if necessary, lead him on a leash. Not all the accommodation facilities are pet friendly. Check it before booking.
If you leave the car in the ferry port Porozina you can take the bus on the line Mali Lošinj – Rijeka. Pay attention, not all the buses on that line are going to Rijeka via Porozina. You can find the time table and purchase the bus tickets on the following link.
The trail is marked and signposted in both directions. So, if you prefer to hike from the south to the north, you can do it.
During the high season (July and August) there is practically impossible to find accommodation if you have not pre-booked it several months in advance. You can do it through popular booking platforms or visit the sites of the local tourist offices (www.visitcres.hr and www.visitlosinj.hr). In the other period of the year, it is easier to find accommodation. Still, if it is important to you that your accommodation has a certain standard of equipment and is located directly or close to the hiking route, we recommend booking in advance.
